The history of ICC Cricket World Cup

The Cricket World Cup is an international tournament conducted every four years. It is the most prestigious competition in one-day cricket and consistently ranks among the most-watched athletic events in the world.

As a set of one-day games with each team getting 60 overs, the first Cricket World Cup was played in England in 1975. In 1987, it was contested for the first time in countries other than England, specifically India and Pakistan. The 1987 match was also notable for the reduction of overs per team to 50. Australia made history in 2007 by winning their third straight World Cup.

Originally held in England, the Cricket World Cup was held for the first time in 1975. Prudential plc, a financial services provider, provided sponsorship for the first three games, which were also known as the Prudential Cup.

The cricket contests were 60 overs each, and the standard white attire and red balls were used. Only daytime contests took place, and the tournament only occurred once every four years.

Only eight countries were allowed to compete in the Cricket World Cup until 1992. Eventually, the number of competing countries rose to 16 at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

In 1975, the English, New Zealanders, Indians, Australians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, and West Indians joined in; in 1979, Canada was replaced by East Africa. Zimbabwe entered the playing field in 1983 while Canada was sitting on the sidelines.

In 1992, South Africa joined the Cricket World Cup. When three new teams from the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, and Kenya joined the competition in 1996, the total number of teams rose to 12. It was the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands that took the places of Bangladesh and Scotland in the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

After England held the first three World Cup games in a row, it was the United States’ turn to host in 1987. During the 1987 World Cup, impartial umpires were first used in the sport of cricket. The 1996 Cricket World Cup kicked off with the first on-screen appearance of the third umpire.

A number of other records have been added to the Cricket World Cup History thanks to the 9 contests performed so far.

The records include the highest batting strike rate, highest individual score, and highest run scorers; the best bowling analysis, highest bowling economy rate, highest bowling strike rate, and leading wicket-takers; the highest team total, lowest team total, all major cricket catches, and actually the most dismissals; and the fewest number of overs played.

Hundreds of people may have watched the first cricket world cup, but this year, millions of people are anticipating the event with eager excitement. Hope you are one of those people!
