Feudal Chinese emperors paid great attention to the hierarchy system. According to an ancient belief, the emperor was the son of heaven and the superior power of heaven was granted to him. The Imperial Palace, which was known as a divine place, was forbidden to the common people, hence it was called the Forbidden City.

The certain colors of the Forbidden City are red and yellow. In Chinese culture, red symbolizes happiness and yellow symbolizes power. Almost all the roofs of the Forbidden City have yellow tiles.

Along the ridge of the official halls, there is a row of statues of mystical animals such as lion, phoenix and dragon. These animals have powerful meanings in Chinese culture. Stone and bronze lions are seen as symbolic guardians beside many of the gates of the Forbidden City. In Chinese culture, the lion is a symbol of power. These statues are always paired and the female lion is on the left side of the male lion.
